Is it Time for Furnace Service or Replacement?

January 05, 2016

When winter hits and we start taking calls about furnaces that aren't producing heat, the majority of them can be tracked back to irregular furnace service and maintenance. If furnace issues are not handled, your system could suddenly stop working and leave you and your family in the cold. However, there are some warning signs you can look out for to know when it's time for furnace service or replacement before your system stops running.

Furnace Age

The typical life expectancy of furnaces is between 12-17 years. If your furnace is 15 years or older it's a safe bet to start furnace shopping now. Buying a new furnace isn't a decision you want to have to make in a hurry. Give yourself enough time to view and weigh all of your options.

Increased Gas or Electric Bills

Furnaces lose efficiency as they age and your system will lose efficiency faster if it has not been appropriately maintained. Envision the extra money you're paying to the utility company as money that could be going towards purchasing a new, more efficient system.

More Frequent Furnace Repairs

The last few years of a furnace's life are when your system incurs the most breakdowns. Take a moment to add up the money you've been spending on furnace repair the previous two years - a new system might be more cost effective.

Strange Noises

Have you heard any weird noises coming from your system? Furnaces start making odd noises near the end of their life. If your furnace is cycling on and off frequently or blowing chilly air, it's time to think about getting your system replaced.

A Dry or Dusty Home

Older furnaces don't humidify or filter the air in your home all that well. Your home can start feeling stuffy and anyone in the home with allergies may notice an uptick in their symptoms. A couple other red flags are: static shocks, drooping plants and cracking furniture.
